چکیده

To improve the blast resistance of a wall system, it is necessary to enhance its energy absorption capabilities and/or increase its mass. Much research has been performed on improving the ductility, and thus the resistance, of a wall system using elastic materials externally attached to the tension side of a wall. This project investigated the static resistance of wall systems with elastic materials added internally to the wall system. Thus, shredded rubber is added to the concrete mix and is used to partially replace the coarse aggregates normally used in a concrete mix design. It is hypothesized that partially replacing coarse aggregates with shredded rubber is expected to improve the blast resistance of the concrete wall panels by improving its ductility. Two rubber contents were evaluated and compared to normal concrete design without any rubber. Concrete cylinders as well as full-scale concrete wall samples with coarse aggregate partially replaced with rubber were evaluated under simulated uniform loading to develop static resistance functions. Generally, it was found that the rubber reduced the compressive strength of the samples and increased the cracks that developed in the samples during testing. The maximum load and the overall resistance of the walls decreased with increasing rubber contents. Also, the failure mode for concrete samples with rubber was different from those without any rubber. Experimental Investigation of the Mechanical and Durability Properties of Crumb Rubber Concrete

Recycling waste tire rubber by incorporating it into concrete has become the preferred solution to dispose of waste tires. In this study, the effect of the volume content of crumb rubber and pretreatment methods on the performances of concrete was evaluated. Firstly, the fine aggregate and mixture were partly replaced by crumb rubber to produce crumb rubber concrete. Secondly, the mechanical an...

A Spray Based Crumb Rubber Technology in Highway Noise Reduction Application

Crumb rubber is a commodity made by re-processing (shredding) disposed automobile tires. This article presents a new technology development on the application of crumb rubber in highway noise reduction systems. Advantages and disadvantages of two commonly used manufacturing processes (molding and spray) of crumb rubber panels are analyzed. It is shown that for the intended application, a sprayi...

Derivation of Empirical Formulae to Predict Pressure and Impulsive Asymptotes for P-I Diagrams of One-way RC Panels

There are only limited studies that directly correlate the increase in reinforced concrete (RC) panel structural capacities in resisting the blast loads with different RC panel structural properties in terms of blast loading characteristics, RC panel dimensions, steel reinforcement ratio and concrete material strength. In this paper, numerical analyses of dynamic response and damage of the one-...
